The problems begin with supporting them steadily and comfortably for an extended period of time.

Common binocular viewing methods:

Hand-holding small binoculars while standing or in a recliner, is an easy common method, and is best with the elbows supported. Sitting down is effectively like increasing aperture, due to the inherent stability, and because energy is not being diverted into keeping balanced.

Mounting larger binoculars on a tripod provides a stable view if standing steadily. It does little to reduce neck strain, unless the binoculars are 45° angled. When standing close to the tripod, its legs will get in the way. One can mount binoculars on a beam or parallelogram that hovers over a reclining chair. The main issue with this approach is the need to constantly reposition the chair and the parallelogram in order to view a different portion of the sky. Moreover, a parallelogram can be bulky and awkward.

Image stabilized binoculars, at a higher cost, can reduce jitters, but don’t treat the above issues.

The binocular chair mount:

A binocular chair can easily sweep any part of the sky, with stability and comfort. The clearest and darkest part of the sky is near the zenith, where there are also fewer obstructions from trees and buildings. Use a light touch of one hand to pan left or right, together with a nudge from the other hand to shift the viewing elevation.
