The other part is the rotating base which supports the chair.

Transcript of the video: “Let’s take a closer look at this rather well-liked azimuth drive. It consists of a wheel on a crossbar, that’s clamped to the left side of the chair frame. The wheel runs along the ground track on the octagonal base. This azimuth drive contains a lot of innovation, so let’s get into it.

“This is a 20-inch geared freewheel, with the gear cluster removed. It’s from the rear of a BMX bike. The wheel rim is 16-inch and the pneumatic tire has a multi-surface tread. It has a solid bolt-on axle.

“The axle extends out a little more on this side because the gear cluster has been removed here. This nicely makes room for the crossbar to fit. The wheel action is very smooth. That’s because inside this axle hole here in the center of the crossbar, is an axle spacer cylinder between the axle and the crossbar. There are fender washers on each side of the crossbar. The crossbar and clamps are made from hardwood flooring.

“The crossbar is clamped onto two legs of the chair frame. When tightening the clamps on the chair frame, they self-adjust to the angles of chair’s legs. The clamp axles have axle hole options, for further adaptability. There is another self-adjusting feature: the height of the entire mount automatically adjusts to keep the right amount of wheel pressure on the ground track.

“Also these surfaces here that are clasping the chair frame are lined with thin rubber.”

This work © 2024 by Milky Way Lounge is licensed under CC BY-NC 4.0

This is part of the bino-chair’s azimuth control mechanism.
