A closer look at the rotating base: a video

Transcript of the video below:

“Let’s take a closer look at this popular rotating base. An award winning prototype preceded this design. This is half of the bino-chair’s azimuth control mechanism. The other half is the drive wheel assembly which will be mounted to the side of the chair. The two main assemblies are the chair platform and the ground board.

Chair Platform: “The chair will sit on this platform, actually facing that way. It is positioned with these four rubber guides. The platform is off-center from the ground board. The center of mass of a fully loaded bino-chair is closer to the rear of the chair, and that should be near the center of rotation, here. The platform is also slightly to the right side of the ground board, so there’s room for the drive wheel to come down and touch the track, there on the left side of the chair.
“Turntable Bearing: The other side of the platform has a turntable bearing installed. The inner ring of the bearing is attached to the platform. The outer ring is offset lower than the inner ring and it simply rests on the ground board. This large bearing makes the entire bino-chair more smooth and stable.

Ground Board:
“Friction Ring: The bearing sits here in this enclosure. The edge of the enclosure also acts as a friction ring. It’s made of eight wood blocks and a carpet ring. As the platform rotates, it brushes against the carpet. For the right amount of friction, the wood block thickness and the carpet thickness has been chosen just right. In a bino-chair, this friction will help reduce any viewing direction bounce-back and any drifting of view, which is especially helpful if the bino-chair is not completely level. You just set the direction and leave it.

“The Base: The rubber track pieces were cut from non-slip stair treads and then glued in place. The eight feet here help with leveling. They hold threaded inserts where the levelers are turned in. To keep it dry, this rotating base normally sits on a tarp or a mat.”
